dr surin

During Asia Business Conference, I had the chance to sit right next to Dr. Surin, the Secretary-General of ASEAN and talked with him at a pre-conference meet up. Dr. Surin is one of the more inspiring figures I meet during the conference. His background as a Muslim from the Buddhist nation Thailand provide some sort of surprise for me. Moreover so when conflicts between Muslim in the South of Thailand and the militants are frequently reported not to long ago. As the SG of ASEAN, it was not surprising that he stressed on cooperation among the ASEAN nations, beginning from its students. To help among each other and to improve the relationships.

I’m a bit skeptical about his idealistic views but a reality check will show that communications with students of other ASEAN nations are a different story altogether. The only common theme I could point out is the youths’ fascination with foreign influence like branded goods. For his argument sake, Dr. Surin used the example of war of the worlds to exemplify what it takes for the ASEAN members to unify together. For the international students, the mere fact that they are outside their native countries and in a foreign situation is enough to substitute for the opposing enemy. And he admitted that the Myanmar issue is a pain in the butt.

I was pretty impressed by his opening speech during the conference. A trained economist he was not. However, it was the way he handled the questions hurled to him that showed his experience as a politician. I wished I picked a thing or two about being a diplomat. He was pretty suave in answering the questions and at the same time, giving out a friendly aura. Perhaps, I should put diplomat as a career prospect. It might help improved my non existing social skills.

recom21announce

A community website portal I’m working with had just been given a face lift together with some cool new features today. It’s the result of the technical and administrators team months of planning and rewriting codes for the website.

For those who don’t know what Recom is, I copied some information about the portal here:

barack-obama

Courtesy of Starpulse. Change we believed in.

The election results are not officially over but the end is clear. The new USA President is set to rumble next year. Rather unfortunately, his first obstacles would be the daunting global financial meltdown and the Iraqi war. Still, he can console himself by taking the credit for the reviving economy for the next few years since the market had gone quite low that it got no way to go but up naturally. The economy is the prime factor in swaying the voters to vote for him as I doubt McCain or more so, Palin knows much about handling a country’s economy revival.

It’s a little past midnight, but the atmosphere is one of festivity. There are shoutings and whistling everywhere and my guess is that, there is some party going on. However, as much as I like Barack Obama and supported him as the better candidate to be the next President, I was hoping that the celebration won’t go so wild as I still need my sleep and obviously, the noise is not helping in the process.

Vote for Change.

(Ann Arbor, Michigan) Just wait until they are drunk

Halloween just passed by. Sadly, I did not went trick or treating as I opted instead for sightseing excusion. Halloween provide an excuse for college students to show their creative wild side once every year. Aside from the usual witches, almost naked men, dracula, devils etc, some newer characters joined the pool this year, namely the Joker from the Dark Knight and my personal favourite, Sarah Palin. Seriously, this is one of the most original and easiest to imitate costume I had seen.

Since I also did not wear a costume that night, I joined a group tour to the lively party scene around the area. It is really a dazzling sight to behold. Some of the guys must have trained their abdomens and biceps rigorously to be Michael Phelps, wearing almost nothing in the cold night.

One of the highlights of the night is the usual rowdiness and the abrupt fight between drunken male egos after a drink or two. Unfortunately, I was strolling alone way past midnight when I walked between two groups who looking quite tense and hurling insults among each other. I did not noticed the atmosphere around me and just passed them when the fighting erupts with me just a few feet away from them. Crowds gathered and look on, some tried to separate the groups. The festivity did not last long as three police patrol cars cruised into the neighbourhood and stop everything. I was actually hoping to see some live entertainment then.

I also did entered one of the fraternity house which was having a party at that time. The bare requirement for entry is to have at least a costume and there are two doormen to make sure of it. They asked me who or what I am and I answered: “I’m cool. So, you should let me in.”, maintaining a steely gaze at them. And thus, I was allowed to enter the house.

I guess party life does not suit me. Untill now, I still had not touch my lips on alcohol even though others succumb to it and consumed it. Perhaps, that is why they seemed to have a more enjoyable time at any parties. As for Halloween, beer is free flow and I seen how the people are wasted further down the night. Another epitome of any drinking night is the availability of smash glass bottles along the street. Sometimes, I get feed up avoiding them and just walk through it.

The awe inspiring logo of Beijing Olympic 2008

These few days, I’d been anticipating for the start of the Olympic Games, hoping to catch a game where Malaysia finally win a gold medal. Before the start of the Games, China had already broken world records with the architecture designs of the various infrastructures and buildings in Beijing. I’m expecting nothing less during the duration of the Games.

Furthermore, it is the first time China is hosting the Games. There is a sense of pride and honor in the country to be the host. No doubt, Confucius teaching of “keeping face” plays a big role where China is trying to give the best image to the world. In a country where the governance is placed on collective strength, it is of no doubt that the Chinese government has divert a lot of funding towards Beijing (40 billion USD – most expensive Olympic ever) to provide a spectacular view for the international body view. The construction of the Bird Nest Stadium, the Cube and other massive structures has lead to the clearance of prime land in Beijing heart and certainly, a hole in the country’s budget. I doubt whether those massive structures will be put to good use after the Olympic Games since the maintenance of the building will also cost up to a bomb. If it comes to this, those building would be like “white elephants” and serve nothing more than to satisfy the ego and vanity of the country’s leaders.

From what I had seen from the Opening ceremony, the central government of China, or more specifically, the Olympic committee has pulled out a labor intensive performance with very flashy fireworks and high tech lighting. I just finished watching the whole opening ceremony and the most surprising part is the lighting of the torch. Defying gravity, flying round the stadium in a complete ellipse to reach the giant torch.

Although from the start of the year, the Beijing Olympic had been plagued with several misfortunes such as the Tibetan  unrest, the Sichuan disaster, the negative human rights image, serious pollution and various other concerns, as well as being the pawn for political pressure across the glob. In the end, the essence of the Olympic Games is about the sportsmanship spirit behind the competitions and the connections built through the Games. It is not about the people bickering at each other, but bringing them closer together as members of the human race.

Thus, I hope the Beijing Olympic 2008 will go on smoothly without a hitch. Besides, I really do hope that Malaysia will do well to earn gold medals in the badminton competition. I need the win to extract a dinner from Jia Min.

Arena of glory – Where stars shine.

INTI Idol just finalized into the final round. The stage is set. The participants are ready. So, let the show rolling. In this singing competition, the darling of Block A manage to land herself in the finals. So, as an act of support, a large group of us bought prime ticket seats right beside the stage to launch our supporting slogans and banners.

People tend to help others whom they know or is somehow related. Through social connections called ‘guan xi’, a single person can accumulate the support of the masses. The things we do to protect this social connection – screaming till the voice is hoarse, snapping up shots like a zealot fan and gathering together in blue themed color shirts to prove our undying support.

Though our star didn’t make it to the final two as the competition progress, we are still trying to obtain her a prize through the popularity votes (which involves money :( ). Unfortunately, for all our gargantuan effort went down the drain when other participants with ‘guan xi’ of their own rise up to the occasion and snatch the popularity contest from right below our fingertips.

As far as the INTI Idol is concern, it seems the social connection is still not enough to overcame public opinion. The final winner is an international female student who, apparently seems to lacking in supporters as to the other more popular male finalist, even though the champion is determined by the majority votes. Congratulations to her.

To our bright star, although she may not take away the the championship, she is still a winner in our hearts. And for all the crazy stuffs the people at the other end of the ‘guan xi’ pulls off, what did we get in return? Apparently nothing, but… We still love you, Valerie!

American Flag – Independence Day on 4th of July

It’s been a year. I’d never thought that time passed so fast. It’s been only been a little more than a year when I first step into INTI for the American University Program. That night, the AUP office told the students to immerse themselves in American culture to prepare ourselves for their future in America. And the first agenda of the week is America’s Independence Day where INTI celebrated it with Elvis Presley look alike and a bonfire.

Today, another year has passed and I’m now a senior. The AUP club would have another celebration tonight considering the incumbent AUP club, I won’t put much expectation in it. :P

And also on this day last year, I knew the birth date of two friends last year since they are revealed during orientation. They’re kinda memorable since the association with the America’s Independence Day.

So, I wish here a Happy Birthday to

Jia Min – the girl with a one of a kind laughter

and

Samantha – the girl who likes to party

Nicked their photos from the profiles :P

٩(●̮̮̃•̃)۶ May your birthday be celebrated with in every glorious touch and tons of fireworks (definite occasion in US).

p.s. July babies rocks! For the obvious reason.

Most of Group I and J

Since this is a long time ago, I felt reluctant to continue it but every beginning deserves a good ending.

Day 2 of the Children Camp is the last day. Sadly, that is all I could take as I was very exhausted from it. Who knew how hyperactive children can be.

The last day was continued on with helping the children to clean themselves up, ie brushing their teeth etc, morning exercise, breakfast and then more activities. The final act is to prepare a drama for showtime. By the draw of the luck, my group got Little Red Riding Hood. I don’t know if I am fortunate or not because hardly anyone in my group can remember the story well, yes, not even the kids! So, we improvise and remake the story in our own flavor.

To round things up, each group is given a large piece of paper with an alphabet in it together with some crayons so each group can color it according to their own taste. The end result is quite nice, considering the myriad of colors which is expected from the creative juice flow of children.

Next, in the closing ceremony, the committees went on to have their own nostalgic memories and some cried out at the thought that the children are leaving and Children Camp is coming to an end. Some went on to hug but not me, lest I develop some attachment to the children.

And so, the children from Rumah Hope, Tri-Ratana, and Kami left for their respective place of belonging.

Bah! She still refuse to take a good picture. :P

Last weekend, LEO Club organized its annual Children Camp event. Boy, was it tiring or what. I need to go to meetings and practice some group dances the week beforehand. Even worse, the night before the big day, we all stay up so late to do last minute work till I overslept the next day.

During one of our preparation nights, this is an orientation for the facilitators to get to know each other.

Here, Julia is still trying to teach us the morale dance for the camp.

As a facilitator, we are all supposed to gather together at 8am sharp on the big day. But sleepyhead me went on and sleep past the 8 am even though my alarm clock has been ringing for more than 1 hour. Sigh, after brushing my teeth, I went running to the Sports Hall with a slice of bread as breakfast. I will regret this extremely light breakfast afterwards.

By 9 something, the kids start to roll in. Since they were only a handful at a time, I go on and talked with the closest one to me. Two boys, younger one is very chubby and outgoing while the older one is a bit quiet. It is nice to talk with them. Then, I found out, they are cousins. Not only that, we then bring them together with another group and found out that there are 3 pair of cousins out of the six children we are talking to. It means, every two child there are related by blood.

The first pair of boys I talked to. The ones behind us are just extras and came in just for the picture.

After that, a big group of children arrived. They are from Rumah Ti-Ratana. Hence, a committee come and break up our merry group, asking some of the facilitators, including me to entertain the newly arrived children.

I went to the registration desk and they assign me with three siblings. Considering my quiet and passive personality, I hope that I won’t bored them to death. Luckily, two other facilitator decided to join in the fun and they also talked them as well. Overall, it is very entertaining with them and I wanted to extend the time I spend with them but then again, we need to separate because the opening ceremony is about to start.

The three siblings under my care. Luckily, these two charming ladies kepo in and help me.

Trust Dr. Sia to be late for the opening ceremony and thus, forcing the committees to stall for time punctual for events like this and to officiate the ceremony in a sweaty sportswear tasteful costume. In fact, Dr. Sia has such a joyful face at the sight of meeting the children. After giving a small speech along with the INTIMA Exco, they quickly exit the building.

Now, I was assign to Group I with three other facilitators – Gary “Superman”, Shirley and Iris. The first two facilitators are superb. They juggle betweens their duties as facilitators as well as being committees.

After the opening ceremony is ice breaking session where the facilitators get to know with the children. Each child is supposed to received part of a heart shape when they registered. This pieces are then matched together to form a heart. Unfortunately, some of the children decided that it is good to tear up the pieces to give to their friends. Since each group’s heart is of different color, they exchanged teared up pieces with their own gang to create a colorful collage. Sigh, no matter how many times we tried to piece them up together, but it was to no avail. So, we just quickly pasted up everything and hope someone can identified that it is a heart shape use or genius and figure the shape out.

And we are supposed to think of a group name and group slogan by then. Since we are running out of time, we simply chose one of the names nominated out. Sadly, democracy did not work, and the name “I love you” group is formed. Don’t even let me started on the slogan. I will let your imagination figured out how Group I Love You slogan turns out. We then have to go on stage and cheered out the slogan for everyone else to hear again.

Next, we have lunch (not really full, must sneak out to buy additional lunch) and some indoor games. Just what where they thinking. Some of the games are fine and dandy but some, I was so scared that the children, especially the younger ones will get hurt in them.

This is another group. They seem to be happy playing dodgeball. But, I fear my little young ones on the receiving ends of it.

Still, everything was not that bad lah. The facilitators can also participate in some of the games.

After games and games and games, they all had games again in the swimming pool! (Can’t they think of anything else to entertain the kids?). One of my children, yes, my children :P cannot swim and I piggyback him all over the pool, splashing water at other people and trying to escape when they splashed back at me.

After this is the poolside games. Frankly, I didn’t enjoy it much because my group keep on losing (what do you expect since most of my group members belong to the younger age group) and one of them almost fainted during the games!

Ah! Water balloons!

My little group “I love you”. Don’t know what I am looking at that time.

Then, it is bath time. Gary, my head facilitator and I bring the boys to the bathroom to bathe. Since he literally didn’t sleep in the past 24 hours, I let him catch some shut eyes by the youngest group member while I look after the other two, trying to search for an empty bathroom for them to shower.

Then, it’s dinner time (also not satisfying) but for kids, enough lah. After dinner is Treasure Hunt. There, we are supposed to go to few stations according to a map and solved the games there. The first station is about finding recyclable waste hidden around the BBQ pit in the dark. Were they good or what, my group managed to find stuff more then what is hidden by the committees. They found beer bottles, cereal boxes and even bring in used tissues as recyclable stuff. Wah, so creative. In fact, one of the older children, Carol, told me that this is not a game at all. It is our way to trick them into cleaning up the places for us :P . In fact, I had something of the same idea too. A few stations where not that eventful until we reached the folding clothes station. There, the children are supposed to fold the clothes in the quick Japanese style. Wow, May Chee (did I get the spelling correct?) was smiling with glee at this. She wasn’t kidding, she is so used to it that she folded up all the dirty piles of clothes in a jiffy.

But due to some unforeseen incidents, Group “I Love You” still ended up being in the last place.

By that time (around 10 pm), the committee show the movie “Ice Age 2″ but the kids don’t want and replaced it by “Waterhorse”. So, while they were munching on snacks and drinking Milo watching the movie, I went to help the committees moved down the mattresses and laid them into position. We are going to have an en mass sleepover tonight.

This child is really lucky. His name is Teh Bin Kit (less I forget about his name) and his facilitator is Mathew (the one wearing red). He cares so much about his child. Bin Kit is 8 years old and look really frail. So, his facilitator decided to share a bed with me so that he can be beside him and look after him. Girls, if you need a potential husband candidate, Mathew is a wise choice.

While we are all asleep, guess what the committees are doing? Some have to stay up all night to make sure the security of the children.

And that concludes Day 1.

With all the pressure contained within me, will I ever be able to release it like the trickle of water or will I explode under the tremendous pressure?

Yesterday was another hectic night for me. Sigh, where can I get the energy to last through the day.

Oh, what confidence, what style, oozing with sexy gracefulness – that is the Latin dance.

As you can guess it, I performed a Latin dance performance last night. Just a small one, but at least I can show my stuff. Since we only practiced the routine in just two practice because of the short amount of preparation time, our performance was so-so lah. Just enough to please the crowd.

So, when someone ask me whether I was the one dancing last night this morning, I don’t know whether to be happy with pride or to hung my face with shame from humility. Since I did not managed to perform the best I could.

The performing pairs. My partner, Natalie is the one on my left.

After the dance, I went on to the chess club meeting instead of returning to my room. What an ego boost to me after the person that I thrashed 3 – 0 was told to me as a state chess player. Has my level of play improve that much or is it just that he is letting me having an easy game?

After finishing three games, I move on towards the Adventure club gathering night. Wah, why so hectic one my life!

A scene of the Adventure Club arena, it is jam packed with people.

I take it light this time and just watch the show. When I arrived, the committees are asking the participants to play a game of passing water balloons around without using their hands. The emcee also requested the people there not to throw the water balloons around because the sound system is around them. But, being teenagers, they never listened and throw a few balloons around.

Haha, retribution. The committee then continue to play a game of Simon Says where they have to sit on the floor. Does anyone wants to sit on a wet floor caused by themselves? :P

Tired, I returned back to my room. That would be the end of my day, but not before I show off my new shirt I just received.

Know what it says?
